We are resuming our Zoom meetings with this important topic:
The connection between hearing loss and dementia.
We will review the presentation Dr. Jaime Wilson gave us last spring, exploring the relationship between hearing loss and dementia. The discussion will be based on Dr. Wilson’s book, Preserving the Etchings of the Mind.
We will also be expanding our sources and including companion information from recent media presentations.

ZOOM – Safety At Home and In Public Places – Tools for the Hearing Impaired Featuring ALRM, a New App for You – Created Right Here in Maine!

Do you wonder if you will be able to hear a fire or carbon-monoxide alarm? How about waking up to your smarphone alarm to wake up in time for work?
In this Zoom workshop, we will be discussing safety tools for the hearing impaired with special emphasis on ALRM, a new smartphone app that will alert you about dangerous, emergency events that do not have alarms. Think of gun shots at the site of an active shooter. Scary.
ALRM was created by Gavin Phelan, a junior at Cape Elizabeth High School who has been hard of hearing since birth. Gavin was deeply affected by the tragic October 2023 Lewiston mass shooting. Of the 18 people killed and 13 injured, four people killed and five people injured were members of Maine’s deaf community.
Gavin will discuss the app, how to use it in your home and how the app is being installed in public places in Maine. It is an exciting development to help people with hearing loss stay safe in dangerous situations.

Brewer Library – Sharing Our Stories Thursday, November 19th
Come to the Brewer Maine Public Library for a fun and lively discussion about our hearing loss journeys. We will laugh, learn, share, and come together with our stories, our victories, and our challenges.
This is an ongoing program with Thursday meeting dates throughout the year. The meetings are not every Thursday, but always 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
